Fourth of July Memories & Traditions
Summertime holidays often come with a bit of extra excitement - the kids are out of school, the weather is (generally) great and the sun sets later. At Suzanne & Company, we have a lot of fun with family and friends during the 4th of July. Read on for some of our favorite traditions and memories!
SOME Head South
One of Suzanne’s all-time favorite holidays, she always spends Independence Day on the Cape. The morning starts with a "parade" around Mashnee island, everyone decked out in patriotic colors. The golf carts, bikes and even dogs are decorated as well! Following the parade, they usually spend time on the boat and have a cookout. At night, they make s’mores and watch the fireworks which can be seen from 360 degrees on the island!
Although Becky’s family doesn’t have many existing Fourth of July traditions, they are looking forward to starting new ones with Suzanne down on Mashnee Island!
Most years, Darcy and her family are at her in-laws’ house in Brewster Park, a great little community on the Cape. There is a bike parade, face painting and hot dogs. They cherish connecting with their summer/Cape friends and enjoy the time together with family and friends.
The 4th of July is a time for Ali’s extended family to find their way to the Cape. They have grown up spending the day at Race Point in Provincetown, getting an off-road permit, letting the air out of their tires and camping out for the day. Their holiday is filled with swimming, charcoal grilling and awesome family time!
Lauren and her always spend the weekend down at the Cape. We always get together with my extended family and have a big bonfire on the beach and watch the fireworks.
Some Head North
In the past, Steph & her son have either been hiking in the mountains or staying in a place near the water. Last year, they enjoyed gorgeous views from the top of Mt. Sunapee. This year they’ll be on the Cape!
Gathering in Bridgton, ME is where you’ll find Thais & her family every year for the 4th. The holiday has transitioned over the years from a raging lake party (when they were in our 20s), through a quiet “babies are sleeping” period, now becoming a bit louder again with kids running around, looking forward to sparklers and s’mores. Rumor has it Summer ‘21 is when the fireworks return to Moose Pond!
Every Independence Day, you’ll find Andrea and her family heading up to Loon Mountain, hanging out on the Pemi River, biking and going to the Lincoln/Woodstock fireworks. They love enjoying the holiday in the mountains.
Beth and her crew always head to Vermont for the 4th of July (no big surprise for those that know her!). They often spend the holiday near Okemo, but last year they stayed at The Equinox in Manchester and this year will be in Stowe.
Annually for the 4th of July, you’ll find Melissa going up to Sebago Lake and spending time on the water with her family and friends.
Some Stay Close to Home
Carey’s family doesn’t have any specific traditions, but they always enjoy spending time with family and friends, either around a pool, at a bbq or heading to the beach. They always try to seek out a good fireworks display, too. In 2019, she took her oldest son, Michael - just 4 years old at the time - to Acton’s NARA Park to cozy up on a picnic blanket together to enjoy the show.
A funny July 4th memory for Ann is of her mom holding one of the grandkids during the fireworks, later revealing he peed in her lap during the fireworks.
Katie’s family usually spends the morning having breakfast or lunch at her friend’s parents’ house on beautiful Duxbury Bay. They then walk to the Duxbury 4th of July parade in the center of town, enjoy a nice bbq poolside with great friends, and finish the celebration with fireworks at night.
Malorie’s 4th of July plans aren’t necessarily traditions, but end up looking pretty similar. She usually attends a cookout during the day with family and friends, followed by a fire at night roasting s’mores. Her favorite part of the day is seeing all of the fun and festive red, white & blue food and drinks everybody brings to share!
Whether your Fourth of July weekend is rooted in traditions or open to any adventures that come your way, we hope you make the most of it!
