Honoring Women...This Month and Always

In our final installment of the Women’s History Month series, we celebrate women who’ve blazed a trail and demonstrated success in a wide array of disciplines, from professional sports to literature. Read on to see who rounds out the list of women that have inspired our team members.

As this month of honoring women comes to a close next week, we pledge to continue to lift one another up and support the continuous efforts by and for women in our community and beyond.

Thais Collins, buyer Specialist

Thais draws inspiration from Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one determined lady. Studying and later working in a predominantly male discipline, she made her way through law school with a baby and became the second woman ever to serve on the US Supreme Court. Watching her interviews and trials are very fascinating as she was determined, polite, sweet, and serious all at the same time. A quote about her relationship with her daughter embodies the balance she found: “When I started law school, my daughter Jane was 14 months. I attribute my success in law school largely to Jane. I went to class about 8:30, and I came home at 4 o’clock. That was children’s hour. It was a total break in my day. And children’s hour continued until Jane went to sleep. Then, I was happy to go back to the books. So, I felt each part of my life gave me respite from the other. …Having Jane gave me a better sense of what life is.” - Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Supreme Court justice and mother of two, in The Atlantic, 2017.

Melissa Courtney, Agent Coordinator

“The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should raise each other up. Make sure you’re very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble.” This quote from Serena Williams speaks to Melissa on many levels, as she honors these words in her own life, but also recognizes that the Suzanne & Company team is a unified and strong group of successful women. As both Melissa and Serena know, one woman’s success can serve as a launchpad for another, continuing to build women higher and higher.

Carey Sclafani, Marketing Director

History was never a favorite subject of Carey’s, but when it was time to study modern American history in high school, her interest was piqued. She learned about Eleanor Roosevelt and was intrigued at how she took the reins of her role as First Lady (for 12 years!!) and breathed new life into the job. She used her public standing as a platform to be heard on the causes that resonated with her, regardless of whether they mirrored public opinion. She strove to match her husband’s salary, and sometimes even publicly disagreed with him. She gave women a voice and courage and marked a turning point in history. One of Carey’s favorite quotes by this oft-quoted woman is timeless advice: “You can often change your circumstances by changing your attitude.”

Darcy Heintz-Perkins, Buyer Specialist

A former English teacher and avid reader, Darcy turns to literature for her chosen female role model. Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter is one of American literature’s first and most important female protagonists. Ahead of her time in many ways, Hester Prynne was a strong woman who faced adversity with grace and who defied societal and gender expectations and norms. Darcy admires Hester’s ability to stay true to herself despite facing a multitude of challenges. In leading by example, Hester gained power and ultimately personal freedom and respect. “The tendency of her fate and fortunes had been to set her free. The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread.”

Malorie Enneguess, Marketing Coordinator

Malorie is struck by Rachel Hollis’s ability to exude confidence, spread words of encouragement, and emanate positive vibes. Hollis guides us, “Decide that you care more about creating your magic and pushing it out into the world than you do about how it will be received.” Our power lies in our individuality. Here at Suzanne & Company, each team member has her own strengths. When those are combined, we are stronger together!

While this may conclude our highlights of women who’ve provided inspiration to our team, may it provide a mere jumping off point for us and our readers to peek into the lives of women doing amazing things worldwide.
