Build Your Backyard Ice Rink (or Find a Local Skating Spot)

As we enjoy our first accumulating snow here in Bedford, we thought it a perfect time to dive into skating season! Read on for local places to skate and tips on creating your own backyard ice skating rink.

DIY ICE Skating Rink

Does the idea of creating a skating rink at your very own home excite you? Or maybe your interest is piqued, but you are uncertain what it entails? In either case, we’re here to help get you started! First, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are the temperatures consistently freezing?

  2. Is there a relatively flat, level section of your yard?

  3. Do you have access to the necessary tools & supplies?

    1. Snow shovel

    2. Garden rake

    3. Garden hose

    4. 2x4 lumber or 3-inch PVC pipe (for border)

    5. Water supply

If you’ve answered yes to these questions and you’re ready to embark on this adventure, check out this great blog post on The Spruce with step-by-step directions, including how to take it down at the end of the season.

There are also a variety of backyard rink kits, like these from Iron Sleet, that take some of the guesswork and supply requirements out of the job.
