Irish Pubs, a Massachusetts Staple

If you live in Massachusetts or have ever visited, you likely noticed that we have no shortage of Irish pubs. While a recent study may have crowned Philadelphia as the best city for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, the Irish roots in Boston are undeniable. We rank 2nd in the aforementioned study, but will always be 1st in the hearts of locals and many, many other lists, like this one, that recognizes Boston as the most Irish city.

But how do you know which Irish pub to check out? The list is a mile long, but we’ve compiled a list of some favorites in Boston and beyond. With a Guinness in hand, we cheers to your pub-going adventures!

Irish Pubs in Boston

  1. Mr. Dooleys, 77 Broad Street (Financial District)

Serving up frothy brews and a wide range of live entertainment - everything from a traditional Irish folk music to stand-up comedians - this long-standing pub has been a local favorite since opening in 1991.

  2. J.J. Foleys Bar & Grille, 21 Kingston Street (Downtown)

When you walk into J.J. Foleys, you not only feel that you are in an authentic Irish pub, but you get a real sense of the history of post-modern Boston.

  3. The Black Rose, 160 State Street (Faneuil Hall)

For 40 years, The Black Rose has been welcoming guests with traditional Irish food and music. You’ll find some New England classics on the menu, too.

  4. Woody’s L Street Tavern, 658 East 8th Street (South Boston, or “Southie”)

This establishment was a favorite of locals long before Good Will Hunting made it a tourist attraction. Although the interior has been remodeled, it maintains its neighborhood bar feel.

  5. Murphy’s Law, 837 Summer Street (South Boston)

A list of the Irish bars in Boston wouldn’t be complete without your quintessential dive bar. Murphy’s Law fits that bill, with an old school vibe and cash-only payment policy.

Irish Pubs Outside of Boston

  1. The Druid, 1357 Cambridge Street, Cambridge (Inman Square)

Deemed a social experience you’ll never forget, this authentic Irish Pub features some of the best traditional menu items you’ll find this side of the Atlantic and amicable Irish bar staff.

  2. The Burren, 247 Elm Street, Somerville (Davis Square)

A fan favorite for over 25 years, The Burren offers nightly musical entertainment in the back room and on the rear patio and a traditional pub-style environment in the front room.

  3. The Corrib, 396 Market Street, Brighton

OK, so technically Brighton is part of Boston…but this pub is about 7.5 miles from downtown. This friendly neighborhood bar has been serving locals, college students and visitors alike for over 50 years and has a second location in West Roxbury.

  4. Plough & Stars, 912 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge (Central Square)

Founded in 1969 by Irish brothers, this legendary pub has been a popular hangout for writers, architects and musicians alike. It’s evolved with the times but remains true to its core: a place to talk, argue and laugh while listening to great music.

  5. Tavern at the End of the World, 108 Cambridge Street, Charlestown

A friendly bar with solid traditional menu items, Tavern at the End of the World features over 50 beers on draft, so you need not stick with your Irish selections! Hole up in the front bar or grab a table in the dining room behind.
